This drawing was engraved by the artist’s grandson, Jules David, who described the figure as “a seated person, fine and distinguished, his arm resting on a thin balustrade.” Jules identified the drawing as a study for a figure in the painting Oath of the Army to Napoleon after the Distribution of the Eagle Standards (Château de Versailles). Recent scholarship, however, has challenged this lineage.
