Although Francesco Tironi's artistic activity remains somewhat uncertain, we do know that he provided the drawings for Antonio Sandi’s twenty-four engravings of islands in the Venetian Lagoon. The engravings were published in 1779, and many of the drawings are extant today. Two reside in the Lehman Collection (see also 1975.1.294). View of Mazzorbo is of topographical interest, for its buildings have all but disappeared. So, too, the island of San Giacomo in Paludo, which lies between Murano and Burano, is deserted today. Tironi records a lost era when the islands of the Venetian Lagoon were prosperous ports of call.
