Head of a Man Wearing a Cap — Domenico Ghirlandaio (Domenico Bigordi)

In this arresting study of a man’s head, the subject is portrayed in three-quarter view, directly confronting the viewer with his gaze. With white heightening, the artist carefully studied the effect of light upon his individual facial features and the contours of his hair. Head studies of this kind, executed in similar technique and with meticulous attention to physiognomy, recall the work of Domenico Ghirlandaio; however, the drawing was probably made by an artist in his circle.
