Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata
Lo Spagna (Giovanni di Pietro)
early 16th century · Point of the brush and brown ink, heightened with white (partly oxidized), traces of black chalk, on paper washed with light brown. · Robert Lehman Collection

This drawing of Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata probably served as a preparatory study for the fresco of this subject painted by Lo Spagna for the church of San Francesco al Monte in Perugia (now Galleria Nazionale dell’ Umbria, Perugia). Dating to the early sixteenth century, the fresco is now generally attributed to Lo Spagna, an artist who appears to have been born in Spain and was active in various regions of Italy. The present drawing illustrates the artist’s interest in the dynamic play of light and shadow upon the ample folds of drapery.
