Saint Sebastian in a Landscape — Ferrara|Francesco del Cossa

This sheet is evidence of Andrea Mantegna’s influence on artists in Ferrara. The pose of Saint Sebastian and the winding road at left are derived from his paintings of the same subject (now in Paris and Vienna). Also reminiscent of Mantegna is the sculptural form of the saint’s body, with its careful attention to anatomical detail. Other features, however, such as the squarish face and narrow limbs of the figure, are typical of Ferrarese painting of the period.
