Andrea da Murano may have trained with the Venetian painter Bartolomeo Vivarini and was heavily influenced by him. This drawing evokes Bartolomeo’s facial types and agitated drapery style and also closely recalls the figural types of Carlo Crivelli. Although Andrea da Murano’s graphic output has not been studied extensively, this drawing shares similarities with his paintings. Executed in blue ink, a technique used in other Venetian drawings of the period, the sheet depicts two unrelated figures—note the disparate positions of their feet—that may have been copied from two separate works.
