Etienne Delaune
second half 16th century · Pen and black, dark gray, and gray brown ink, and (between the pen lines of the illusionistic frame) brush and gray ink, on vellum. · Robert Lehman Collection

This drawing is a preparatory study by Etienne Delaune for one of a series of six engravings, also by him, representing various hunt scenes. The very same scene is carved on one side of a heron-shaped rock crystal bowl, manufactured in Florence to commemorate the wedding of Grand Duke Ferdinand in 1589.
