River Landscape
Jaques Saverij
ca. 1600 · Pen and brown ink · Robert Lehman Collection

Jaques Saverij’s later drawings imitated, and emulated, Pieter Breugel the Elder (1525/30-1569) so successfully that they were often identified as the work of Breugel himself. River Landscape is one such sketch. Although similar to Breugel’s mountain landscapes of 1559-61, the Lehman sheet relates in both style and subject matter to Saverij’s etchings, and probably dates to about 1600. Saverij’s drawings of the period are more loosely modeled than is compatible with Breugel’s precise yet feathery technique.
