A miniaturist, draftsman, engraver, etcher and designer of woodcuts and stained glass, Sebald Beham (formerly known at Hans Sebald Beham) was one of the most prolific graphic artists of his time. This crude, grimacing male shares the same clear contours and broad crosshatching found in several other extant head studies by Beham in the museums of Berlin, Dresden and Vienna. The Lehman drawing may have been a preliminary sketch for a popular, profane subject, perhaps a woodcut left unexecuted when Beham died a year later, in 1550.
