This tiraz fragment has two addorsed lines of kufic script embroidered in red silk. The majority of the inscription is preserved; it follows the style of workshops produced in the Abbasid and early Fatimid periods, beginning with the Muslim expression of faith (the Shahada) and names the Fatimid caliph al-‘Aziz (r. 975–96 CE) as well as the year of manufacture (366 AH/976 CE). The finished edge of the fabric that is preserved in this fragment suggests that it was originally part of a shawl.
