On enameled ware, overpainting can easily be applied without drawing notice, and restorers used it extensively; early twentieth-century practitioners perfected the technique by refiring objects. The horseman bowl’s modern restoration, for example, involved fills made from an identical bowl manufactured for the purpose and a refiring of the reconstructed and repainted vessel.
