Folio from a Khavarannama (The Book of the East) of ibn Husam al-Din — Maulana Muhammad Ibn Husam ad Din

The Khavarannama (Book of the East) chronicles the adventures of ‘Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, and champion of Shi’i believers. These stories take a legendary rather than strictly historical perspective, and include encounters with demons, dragons, and kings. Produced under the Aq Quyunlu Turkmen, this monumental manuscript originally contained 685 folios. In this scene, a guide leads a prince and his companions to a tent that is guarded by a dragon.
