Scented Necklace
Unknown
first half 20th century · Silver, coral, copal, amber · Islamic Art

This large and heavy necklace has been fabricated with generous amounts of coral, amber, and copal. Copal and amber are solidified states of tree resin which were valued in part for their pleasing scent. This stunning necklace emits a distinct aroma, and would have been a delight to one’s eyes and nose at once. Red colored gemstones like these were believed by Amazigh (or Berber) groups to provide baraka, or blessing to the wearer.
