Heavy bracelets, such as this one, were an important part of a woman’s dowry, and served as portable wealth, which could be sold if the need arose. Red coral is commonly found in Amazigh (Berber) jewelry across North Africa, though imitation gems in glass or plastic are also common substitutes for precious stones.
