Long, coarse sheep fibers are usually selected for the warp as they can withstand high tension during weaving. In contrast to this typical practice, the warp, weft, and pile of these rare carpet fragments appear to be of the same quality. Microscopic cross-sectional examination reveals a mixture of fibers with and without visible medullas, indicating that they are a medium-quality of sheep's wool.
