Emeralds were a favorite gemstone of the Mughal emperors, and were brought into India by the Portuguese through Goa from the new world, especially Colombia. This ring, with its large, flat cut emerald and red, green and white enamel on the verso illustrates a continuity of these earlier Mughal tastes and techniques.
