Lantern for a Lamp
Unknown
9th–10th century · Earthenware; carved decoration, unglazed · Islamic Art

This unglazed lantern has a small opening that allowed the insertion of a lamp, and a handle that made it easier to carry. Its abstract pattern of pierced lines would have cast pleasing shadows when the lamp inside was lit.
