Bowl Depicting a Princely Couple
Unknown
12th–13th century · Stonepaste; luster-painted on opaque white glaze · Islamic Art

A bearded male figure in a turban faces a woman wearing long earrings and playing the cymbals. Both figures are set against a background of arabesques and medallions. Although the heavy line that outlines the figures is characteristic of lusterware made in Rayy, Iran, the dense background on this exceptionally large bowl is unusual.
