The features of this young prince resemble those of the emperor Shah Jahan, who as a prince was known as Khurram. However, this painting is several degrees removed from the royal observations of the princely visage which are more firmly recognizable. This point, along with the overall stiffness, proportions and dark background suggest it comes from an artist based in a provincial Indian court, or elsewhere.
