Wood was treasured in Egypt, as it was scarce, and pieces like this one were used to decorate important buildings, such as mosques. The beveled style, as exemplified by this piece, continued to be used under the Fatimids. The style changed slowly and stylized wood carvings began to be enriched by the use of arabesques, figural subjects, and animals.
