This fragment was once part of a larger rug probably a carpet to cover the floor in a tent used by the nomadic Turkmen tribes of Central Asia. Their weavings are renowned for their technically skilled and visually dramatic designs. This example can be attributed to the Tekke subgroup of the Turkmen based on the specific form of the octagonal medallion pattern known as gul, which are unique to each tribal unit.
