This bowl attributed to Syria and similar ones with carved decoration are attested for among the earliest stonepaste vessels produced in Syria in the second half of the 11th century, while the iridescent decay of the turquoise glaze may be indicative of a transitional phase of production. The bowl came to the Museum in 1923 after being acquired from the Demotte art galleries. The notations in pen or pencil under the base, reading twice "B.X.F.46" and once "2.11.21", most likely refer to the dealer's catalogue system.
