Ruby Luster Bowl with Large Palmette

The two shades of ruby luster and golden luster of this bowl represent an early approach to the production of luster ceramics in ninth century Iraq, in which a polychrome palette is used to decorate the interior and exterior of the vessel. While the palmette motif at the center of the bowl is not unusual on Abbasid period luster ceramics, the extensive use of the ruby color makes it rare amongst those that have survived to modern times.
