Textile Fragment Depicting Figures in a Landscape
Unknown
dated A.H. 1008/1599–1600 CE · Silk, metal wrapped thread; lampas · Islamic Art

This textile fragment depicts a kneeling servant offering a bowl of fruit to a man standing beside a tree. The idealized scene of figures in a landscape setting was popularized by illustrations to Safavid poetic anthologies, and were emulated by textile designers. The black outlining of the figures and other motifs (including the wine cup containing a date, A.H. 1008/A.D. 1599–1600, and signature, Husain) create a graphic quality akin to line drawing.
