This ornament, one of a pair with 91.1.1145, takes the form of an amulet holder, a design that was intended to hold furled pieces of paper inscribed with verses of the Qur’an or other holy words. Such amulets were worn on the body to protect the wearer. This pair is studded with turquoise, coral, and glass beads and would have been pinned on each side of the wearer’s chest.
