Tunic Fragment with Lions and Putti

The intricately decorated red back ground clavus (band) and tabula (square) that partially survive on this fragment may have been the decoration of a tunic. On the band ending in a teardrop-shaped pelmet, nude putti with legs extended as if in flight alternate with striding lions and a stylized vine scroll growing from an elaborate pot. One lion appears at the surviving corner of the square. Lions, a popular theme among the elite who enjoyed hunting, were also images of authority.
