The design on this large roundel is referred to as the knot of Solomon, a motif formed by looped bands that interlace to form a cross. These knots were believed to have apotropaic (from the Greek apotropaios, meaning “turning away evil”) powers. They guarded the entrances to rooms in homes and the sanctuary of churches. Examples of the Solomonic knot are found on a variety of domestic and personal goods, such as stoppers for sealing jars and on amulets.
