View near Rouen
Richard Parkes Bonington
ca. 1825 · Oil on millboard · European Paintings

As Bonington was born in England but received his training in France—with Antoine-Jean Gros—his work enjoys a place in the history of both British and French art. This small view, painted from the bank of the Seine opposite Rouen, was probably made in the late summer or autumn of 1825. Bonington had recently returned from London, where he fell under the spell of Constable and Turner, and where he encountered Delacroix and other French Romantic painters.
