Through its use of textured brushstrokes and illusionistic devices, Fetti’s painting pays homage to the great sixteenth-century painter Correggio. Christ’s gaze is directed down at the viewer while putti playfully peek out from his robe; the head of one putto supports his extended foot. Following a fight with a fellow artist, Fetti moved from Mantua to Venice, where he executed this painting for Count Francesco Gambara of Brescia.
