Created in great quantity, paintings in tempera on linen from this period are now rare. One advantage of the medium was ease of transport. Such small-scale works were serially produced for devotional purposes and circulated widely. Eight surviving examples show this tender Virgin gazing at the Christ Child, who reaches up to nurse. The encircling prayers concern the Immaculate Conception, a doctrine stating that Mary was conceived without sin. Indulgences were granted for reciting such prayers.
