The steel mace was a horseman’s weapon, carried in conjunction with a sword or other arms. This type, with a relatively thin, faceted shaft and a short head fitted with pierced triangular flanges, represents a style found in Western Europe from about the mid-fifteenth century to the early sixteenth century.
