The Flight into Egypt — Luca Giordano

In 1692 Giordano was summoned from Spanish-controlled Naples to Madrid to become court painter to King Charles II. Giordano was among several artists who brought Italian baroque innovations to the Spanish court, which increasingly adopted a lighter, more animated mode. This painting was commissioned for the French court by Charles II’s successor, King Philip V.
