The Nativity with Saints
Ridolfo Ghirlandaio
Date unknown · Oil on wood · European Paintings

Ridolfo came from a family of artists and was the son of famed painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. He was known as a skilled portraitist and painter of large-scale decorative works and small portable altarpieces. The original location of this work is not known, but the presence of Saint Benedict in one of the wings and a kneeling Benedictine in the foreground of the center panel suggests that it was made for a Benedictine monastery. Painted around 1514, this triptych would have provided members of the monastery with a visual stimulus for their prayers.
