The text on this document reads: "Memm. The white Scabbard and the blade in it to be put to the steel hilted sword.––with steel mounting done in the neatest manner.––The shank which goes through the hilt to be reddened with sealing wax to give a lustre of that cast to the steel.–– The blade and scabbard to the steel hilted sword to be shifted to the other-and the mounting on the white scabbard, also made to fix thereon.–– Col. Hay will be so obliging as to induce Mr. Bayley to do this small job as soon as possible.–– 16th Nov. 1779. G. Washington"
