Nordfeldt was as much inspired by the subjects of Japanese prints as by their technique. Here, the animated plume of water crashing against the pier surely references Hokusai’s iconic "Great Wave." Nordfeldt expressed his attraction to "the nature of water, its fluidity, its weight and strength," writing further: "I have always been interested in the sea and the loneliness of the sea, and thus I try to create the feeling of loneliness, of depth, of weight, of volume and force."
