This print shows a heavy, large-breasted woman reading a letter. Dressed in a low-cut gown with short Tudor style slashed sleeves and a swag of roses adorning her shirt, she stands before a column whose base is carved with the word "Amo" [love]. The three ostrich feathers in her hair, the personal symbol of the Prince of Wales, suggests that this is Caroline of Brunswick, the prince's long-estranged wife. When George III died in 1820, and her husband became king, she decided to return self-imposed exile on the Continent, hoping to be recognized as queen.
