Toaster — Richard Hamilton|Kelpra Studio Limited

Hamilton, who demonstrated a sustained interest in industrial design throughout his career, often took as his subjects quotidian objects, such as this Braun toaster. Toaster is the first print in which Hamilton combined different techniques: the background is an offset print, and the black casing and knobs of the toaster, as well as the shadow it casts and the artist’s name (which replaces the Braun logo), are screenprinted. The text in the lower portion comes from Braun advertising brochures and simulates the typeface used by the manufacturer.
