Sargent experimented with lithography by working directly on the stone to produce this second version of "Study of a Young Man, Seated" (an earlier version of the print, 50.558.4, was exhibited in Paris in 1895). After applying dark patches of lithographic tusche (a special oily crayon or ink), he scratched highlights across the figure’s head and torso, reworked the architectural element at upper left, and transformed the subtle tonalities of the original image into an abstract pattern of darks and lights.
