Ovid's Metamorphoses tells of the love between Acis, a Greek youth, and the sea-nymph Galatea. The myth tells how the Cyclops Polyphemos kills Acis out of jealousy and Galatea transforms him into an immortal river spirit. Here the couple sits in a shell drawn by dolphins and attended by putti.
