The Life Class, Second Stone — George Bellows|George Bellows

This lively scene depicts the painter Robert Henri’s evening life class, intended for young men who held day jobs. After arriving in New York from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, in 1904, Bellows had immediately enrolled in Henri’s courses at the New York School of Art. In 1909, Henri left to establish his own art school in the building where Bellows had his studio, making it possible for the younger artist to walk down the hall to attend class.
