Bit Boss with Saint George and the Dragon
Unknown
second half 16th century · Copper alloy · Arms and Armor

Circled by a rim consisting of winged cherubs' heads, the central scene of this bit boss depicts Saint George on his horse waving his sword towards the dragon at his feet. He is surrounded by the princess on the left and a castle on the right. Bit bosses were ornamental elements decorating both sides of a horse bit. During this period they regularly displayed Christian or Ancient scenes often copied from medals and plaquettes.
