Power was among a group of British artists who studied linocut printmaking at the Grosvenor School in London after World War I. Inspired by the fast pace of modern urban life, these artists emphasized color and formal dynamism in their prints. In the 1930s the London Underground commissioned the artist to design a series of posters advertising sporting events at different stops along the line. This trial color proof is for one of Power’s most famous prints, depicting crowded commuters on a subway train.
