New England Landscape II — Yasuo Kuniyoshi

This image of a group of gravestones atop a hill harkens back to Depression-era images of industrial landscapes through the smokestack in the background at right. But the American flag positioned within the cluster of headstones connects the work to World War II, which began in 1939 and which the United States officially entered at the end of 1941—the year Kuniyoshi made this print. In the 1930s, the artist traveled to Japan, his country of birth, where he became keenly aware of Japanese imperial ambitions and solidified his antiwar stance.
