The George Bellows Class

Bacon took a portraiture class at the Art Students League of New York taught by Bellows. Here, she used drypoint, an intaglio printing technique she had taught herself using zinc plates and an old printing press discovered in a League classroom, to depict her teacher surrounded by students. While Bellows taught traditional portraiture methods, Bacon preferred a caricature style; she once acknowledged that each figure here is a portrait of a particular individual.
