Roed was a student and friend of the most renowned artist of the Dutch Golden Age, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. Like Eckersberg, he was adept at painting the landscape and cultural heritage of Denmark; he was especially talented at depicting architectural monuments. In 1836 he won the "A Place or Public Building" competition at the Art Union with his painting of the same view of Frederiksborg as this etching, which provides an unusual look at the Carousel Gate. The etching, unlike the painting, could be bought by a wider public hungry for representations of Danish national pride.
