The bulbous shapes in this drypoint derive from the monumental plaster heads of Marie-Thérèse Walter that Picasso produced in Boisgeloup during the summer of 1931. Interested in transforming a three-dimensional sculpture into a flat print, he obsessively worked and reworked the print in twenty states. This impression, pulled from the final state, reveals evidence of pentimenti, or drawing from earlier states.
