Maternal Joy
Pablo Picasso|Jacques Frélaut|Galerie Louise Leiris
1922, printed 1961 · Etching · Drawings and Prints

The birth of Picasso's first son, Paulo, in February 1921 inspired this tender etching of a mother and child. Their rotund bodies are typical of his monumental heads and nudes of this period. The pose of the playful child is very close to Poussin's depiction of Cupid wrestling a baby satyr in his painting Venus and Mercury (ca. 1627-29, Dulwich Picture Gallery), which Picasso likely knew from a reproduction.
