"The History of Joseph the Carpenter" (Chapter XIX), one of the books of the Apocrypha describes this subject. Jesus as narrator is recorded as saying: "My undefiled mother Mary, therefore, went and entered the place where Joseph was. And I was sitting at his feet looking at him, for the signs of death already appeared in his countenance." When in Sir Robert Walpole's collection the painting that this engraving reproduces was attributed to Velasquez and highly valued. Now, the painter is thought to be Alonso Cano, active in Madrid ca, 1646-52.
