"Une splendide creature que j'avais aimee la veille..." — Auguste Rodin|Auguste Clot

Rodin contributed twenty drawings as illustrations for a luxury edition of his friend Octave Mirbeau’s avant-garde erotic novel "The Torture Garden." Masterfully translated into lithographs by printer Auguste Clot, each sheet came in a tissue-paper sleeve printed with the corresponding line of text and a reduced-scale contour version of the drawing. This example, keyed to the line "a splendid creature that I had loved the night before," relates to a part of the novel in which the femme fatale, Clara, recounts her past affairs with women.
