This etching is from a group of sixteen made by Fragonard in Paris around 1763-64, based on black chalk drawings he had made in Italy a few years earlier for his friend and patron, the abbé de Saint-Non. This composition derives from a pendentive in the church of Santi Apostoli in Naples by Giovanni Lanfranco (Italian, 1582-1647). Fragonard had visiting Naples in the company of Jean Robert Ango in March, 1761.
